As a family ski-club the DHO organises a number of all-day fun training courses for youngsters during the British School Holidays. Our coaching programmes are designed to develop the individual to get the best out of their skiing in whatever direction they choose.
Coggins is great foundation training for kids interested in going to serious race training with DHO Racing. For a taste of proper race training we have the performance group during February half term. For those who want sociable all mountain skiing with a great local guide and coach then Eagles is the popular teenage choice.
We train versatile, adaptable, skilful skiers with a life-long love of skiing, they have fun and make life-long friends. Several who started in Coggins have gone on to be Ski Teachers and even come back to teach with us in Wengen Ski School.
As we are an all-day activity Parents can go off and explore safe in the knowledge that their kids are having the best time with a great bunch of like-minded skiers.
Table of Contents
Coggins is unique to the DHO and to Wengen. The origins of the name are lost in the mists of time but it is thought to refer to the little “Cogs” on the railway.
Fun, Fast skiing for 7 to 13-year olds. When kids are ready for something different from regular ski-school they should try DHO Coggins. Coggins runs all day so Parents are free to do their own thing or ski with the DHO adults.
Developing speed and control in recreational and pre-race training Kids. The emphasis is on fun and activity-based learning. Trainers are carefully selected from the Swiss Ski School though the Coggins training programme is distinct in its approach to skier development. Coaching is given on the move with constantly changing tasks and variety of terrain. We do a lot of skiing and the trainers know every jump and bump on the mountain. Coggins learn a lot whilst having the best time!!
Parents have commented not only on what their kids achieve with skiing but also on the development of personal confidence and social skills.
Kids just say “It’s cool”!!
We try to keep the group size to a maximum of 8 or 10. However we will organise as many groups as we can so that group standards are more even. Early booking helps.
Coggins can expect to take part in a race during their week for which they all receive a certificate and there are prizes for the winners. The prize giving is a great event back in the DHO Club House and is also when we present the coveted Coggins Badge.
We often privileged race on the Lauberhorn World Cup Piste especially for our big half term.

The coach this year was Martina Wyss a current World Cup Skier with the Swiss Telemark Team. We will always strive to have a coach of this quality.
“In February half term we took part in the DHO Performance Group race-training and had a fantastic time. Peter Wyss was our coach; he is a professional ski-race coach and he taught us how to ski Giant Slalom races during our five-day course.
“In the mornings we did race-training which involved skiing a course Peter had set up for us again and again. He filmed us racing the course and then we would all go to a small hut nearby where he could show us what we were doing and give us advice on how to improve our racing line, and our body posture, style and speed. We felt it improved our skiing massively over the course of the week.
“In the afternoons he took us to do other fun skiing including some off-piste skiing and speed tests. There were only five of us in his group, and so he was able to give each of us lots of attention. It was really fun to be taught by him and he was an excellent coach!
“At the end of the week we joined in the DHO Polytechnic races, and a special cup was awarded to the fastest racer in the Performance Group.
“We’re hoping Bob will be able to persuade Peter to run another course next February year as we would like to do this again!”
Toby and Rory Francis (Aged 13 and 11)
