Description
The story of 100 years of the Downhill Only Club is as much the story of the development of British skiing, of our home village Wengen and of the growth of skiing tourism in Switzerland. We have all grown up together.
This anniversary book is a mixture of nostalgia, humour and occasional immodesty. We started off in 1925, accepting a challenge from the already established Kandahar club in Mürren, whose skiers came across the Lauterbrunnen Valley on February 6 that year to challenge the Wengen British, accompanied by what appeared to be a highly organised Service Department, fully equipped with spare parts and with all sorts of aids to skiing.
They beat us and we have thrown down the gauntlet ever since, most recently with the annual 24/25 race signifying our respective years of founding.
First and foremost: ski racing, and race training for all ages, participation in the wickedly tough Inferno Race in Mürren and the Intereuropean amateur club races, friendship, camaraderie, attachment to our village Wengen and its inhabitants, skiing off the beaten track, mountain touring, socialising and above all, just wallowing in the unsurpassed beautiful scenery all around.
We are blessed, and this modest anniversary book is here to remind us all of the great privilege of being members of the best ski club in the world, past, present and future!
