Lauberhorn, weather a race and some fresh snow

We enjoyed winter’s arrival over the last week. The view of the world famous trio is from the train as we returned from Murren. We had a glorious day. It included three descents from the Schilthorn on magnificent fresh snow. We also managed a few turns in un-tracked fresh snow too.

I also had a superb roast beef sandwich in the Sonnenberg Restaurant for lunch. I think it was especially enjoyable because of it reminded me of a sandwich I had with my father as a boy. We, my Dad and I, had just walked through from Corrour train station to Dalwhinnie and roast beef really hit the spot.

Wednesday was then much brighter and sunnier all morning than expected. 2.5 hours of multiple lines in fresh snow in and around the Lauberhorn lift, the Salzegg (punch) bowl and Fallboden; delightful. Lunch was delayed a little when Robin lost a ski for 20 minutes! As often is the case, it seemed he was basically sat on the missing ski!

The next day was Thursday. We had to wait for the Swiss Slalom team to finish training before we could set our own slalom course on the Mannlichen. Racing started at 10:15. Someone managed to carry more speed through the course than anyone else. Here are the results:

The MR W.A.M.P race. (Minor Race with a massive prize)
Thursday 12th January 2017

This especially tight slalom course, requiring quick direction change with minimum loss of speed over 20 gates, was held on the Mannlichen race training area. The sky was overcast there was a cool breeze, flat light and fairly soft snow.
The racers arrived eager to get on with a course inspection and race! We had had to wait for the Swiss Ski Team to finish practising before we could start. Inspections done and the race commenced at 10:15. 2 runs were dispensed of quickly with only one racer crashing out on their second run. From above we could see it was all about carrying speed through the last 4 gates. A close finish but the training of Mr Harb seemed to shine through!

This race was introduced by Andrew Davies on the Thursday before the Lauberhorn race in January 2013 and has run every year since. The prize is a pair of donator tickets to the Lauberhorn Slalom Race. These tickets have been bought by the DHO for the last 20 years and they have been used by the various Wengen Managers in different ways.

Hopefully the weather this weekend allows a for an entertaining Lauberhorn Race, fingers crossed!
