Greetings from Wengen!
The mixed conditions have continued this season with periods of thaw and freeze and then just in the last week we have had some fresh snow.
Ski Leading
Over the last period, members have enjoyed skiing with James Vickers and David Mair, both James, and David stepped in at short notice to help with the ski leading. The groups have enjoyed good weather and good piste conditions over the last few weeks, despite the lack of fresh snow the mountain crew has maintained the pistes in excellent condition throughout the half-term period.
Polytechnic Cup and the Gillian Davies races
We held the Polytechnic Cup and the Gillian Davies races at half term, the Coggins also pushed out of the start hut, competing for the Coggins trophies.
Archie Hall received the Gillian Davies Cup from Stephen Davies, 2nd Cerys Francis, and 3rd Coco Bucher.
Toby Francis was the winner of this year’s Polytechnic Cup, 2nd Gemma Hall, 3rd Michael Bucher
Kurverein Crystal –
this year the Kurverein Crystal took place on Thursday 23rd of February. A pairs race that followed the format of some of the original DHO races from the past.
We headed up to Kleine Scheidegg on a clear and cold day. Four pairs took part in a race that started on the station platform. There had been a dusting of snow on the upper slopes, the first fresh snow we had seen for a while. The lower slopes were icy, although groomed to perfection so a fast descent was possible. The race was age handicapped with a couple of minutes between each team, a walking start along the length of the platform followed by a descent to Arven, back to Scheidegg, across to the Rat-run then a fast schuss to Bumps, down the Haneggschuss then a left turn to the finish above Mary’s Cafe.
Rolf Wegmuller the leader of the Wengen Tourist office (in years gone by this was called the Wengen Kurverein) came to the clubroom to present the prizes and award the trophy. The winners were Andrew & Zara Crockett in a winning time of 17 minutes 44 seconds, they started last and finished first!
Andy Capp Charger Plate – Closest Gap
The Andy Capp Charger. Took place on a fantastic day on the Lauberhorn race piste, there had been a fair bit of wind overnight and a strange pebble dash-like texture had formed on the snow surface.
A small field enjoyed the 2 Giant Slalom runs which went below the Russi sprung.
The ladies had the best consistency on the day, with Tessa Lawrance, third Dorine Borgess, second, and Suzi MacArthur winning with a time difference of 0.20 seconds between her two runs.
Adrian Schwarz Challenge
On the 6th of February Eoin O’Mahony, completed a solo big day out skiing just over 20000m in the day, 36 runs, 110km of skiing. A remarkable achievement considering Eoin was a novice skier at the start of the season.
Railway Cup
A rescheduled Railway Cup was held on Thursday 9th of March, we gathered at Kleine Scheidegg for a briefing by Marco Luggen, due to strong winds many of the chairlifts were off. The event consisted of a ski safari to Wengen, Mannlichen, V Bahn terminal, and Eiger Express return to Kleine Scheidegg. This was followed by an excellent lunch at the Station restaurant, Marco outlined the progress and development plans for the Jungfraubahnen. Geoffrey Gay was the recipient of this year’s Railway Cup trophy.

We look forward to the 24/25 Cup on Thursday and Friday against The Kandahar, Avalanche talk on Monday after skiing at 4 pm in the Club room.
